As mentioned Monday, last weekend hubby and I helped our
daughter and her new husband move to Reno. They’ll spend the next 12 months
there while our son-in-law completes his rotations for his final year of
Pharmacy College. It’s an exciting time for them as Kyle sees the culmination
of his education and the beginning of his career.
It’s also a little scary—having to move away from friends
and everything familiar. Everything is new. Everything is unknown. Everything
has yet to be unveiled.
I can’t help but feel selfish as I relish in the opportunity
to have them closer. Two hours away instead of 12. A quick jaunt up the hill.
It feels like they’re practically up the street.
The effort on my behalf will be to remember my role as
mother has changed. The part of nurturing that means upbringing,
training, education was over years ago.
But the part that means supporting and encouragement remains.
Forever.
Not just as a mother. But as a Christian and a citizen of
this world. To support and encourage others. To nurture.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for the people you
have placed in my life. Thank you for the people who support and encourage me.
Please show me ways today to nurture others in your name. Amen.

Their move came at a great time to coincide with your post, didn't it? Praying they get settled quickly. I don't think we ever stop nurturing our children. Nicely done, Carol.

I enjoyed raising my kids. I loved being home for them and my life was in many ways defined by them. Now I've had to step back. They (usually) don't want me to "mommy" them. So I pray for them every day, for their protection, for their future spouses, for blessings on their efforts, for their career paths, for their friends--for God's guidance to the best path for their life. It is a great comfort having a heavenly Father who is also a Mother.
@ Pam - Prayer is absolutely the most important thing we can do. It's empowering--praying and being prayed for both.
It is humbling to adjust to new roles as our children grow older

I appreciate the differences you noted in nuturing when children grow into adults. My "mama heart" is the same, but their needs are not. Good post. :)

Isn't it interesting people's perceptions of geographic distance. For me, living on the island of Tasmania, a 2 hour drive from Launceston to Hobart seems like a world away whereas to you, it's just around the corner.
I like how you point out that we have a responsibility to encourage and nurture anybody we can, not just those who are closest to us.
@ Adam - wow--good point about geographic perception! For me it is about comparison: 2 hours is way better than 12, so it's practically "up the street." Thanks for your thoughts.
