This post is part of the Christian Writers blog chain. Our theme for October is “harvest.” Please see the links to the right and read what my friends have to say about harvest.

===================================

My typical poetic style is to include as much horrible rhyming and as many groan-inducing puns as I can fit onto one sheet of paper.

Today I’m trying something different. I hope you enjoy these thoughts about one of the symbols of harvest time: corn.

COBS

Colored kernels on a cob

Dried husks tied in threes

Does the red taste different from the purple?

Or the black?

STALKS

Green fields turned brown

Stalk tips touch the sky

Becoming mazes of maize

KERNELS

Candy corn,

like lost teeth looking for a fairy

Half Haiku? Definitely original. I like the mazes of maize, visiting a corn maze is one of the fun things to do around harvest time.

yes, they must all taste different right? the yellows and reds are the best, the black... eeeks!

the only thing i could really add to this is the "ears" ... need to use mine more to listen... for His great voice!

Thanks Carol, I really enjoyed this "Carol LITE" post today :)

@ Dave - those mazes--we city folk only get the dinky, man-made ones. Now God knows how to make a maze!

From Carols Quill said...

@ Chris - ah, yes, the ears! Great addition!

Carol, these are wonderful, especially your twist on maze/maize in "Stalks." Lovely, little, lyrical vignettes! :)

@ Cindee - Wow. Thank you so much. That means a great deal to me coming from you who are such a lovely poetess!

Ah . . . I see you belong to the same school of poetry I studied under (the horrible rhyming and groan-inducing puns thing). It's always nice to encounter an artist in the same vein, isn't it? ;-)

My favorite was the candy corn one—though I have a theory, and granted, it's just a theory, that the reason they never find their fairy is because no one puts them under their pillow at night. And now that I think of it, there's really no reason not to test my theory. If my wife should happen to find the Halloween candy under my pillow tonight, however, I'll refer her to you for an explanation.

Your post "inspired" me to eat a bowl of popcorn.

Love it! Great job

@ Sheila, Tracy, Mike and Debra - thanks for the encouragement.

@ Scott - re the candy corn--you're right that it seems like such a waste to put them under a pillow when we could get more pleasure from just popping them into our mouth!
