This month, as the friends of Lisa celebrate her life well lived and pray for the dear family she left behind, I focus today’s post on praying that her husband, Dan and their three children will live the meaning of their names.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Rodney will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will find his home in you; that you will be his place of refuge amid the raging river of life. I pray that he will also be a place of refuge for others. Amen.

Hector: anchor, steadfast

Heavenly Father, I pray that Hector will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will always look to you as his anchor; that he will hold steadfast to your strong arm throughout his life. Amen.

Abigail: joy of the father

Heavenly Father, I pray that Abigail will live the meaning of her name. I pray that her life and her love for you will bring you joy and will glorify you. Amen.

Chelsea: port for chalk or limestone

Heavenly Father, I pray that Chelsea will live the meaning of her name. I pray that she will be a port in the storm for others and that you will be her strong port and safe harbor always. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Arnold will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will cling to your promise that he will be like Isaiah 40:31, hoping in you, Lord, that you will renew his strength, soar on wings like eagles, run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint. Amen.

Daisy: eye of the day

Heavenly Father, I pray that Daisy will live the meaning of her name. I pray that your eye will be on her throughout each day, just as your eye is on the sparrow and the lilies of the field. Amen.

Darius: upholder of the good

Heavenly Father, I pray that Darius will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will hold fast to your goodness and will raise your salvation and glory like a banner in his life so that others will see you through him. Amen.

Sandra: defender of mankind

Heavenly Father, I pray that Sandra will live the meaning of her name. I pray that throughout her life she will lean on you as her defender and that she will lift up others to you in prayer that you may defend all of mankind against evil here on earth. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Eunice will live the meaning of her name. I pray that every trial in her life will result in victory through you and that she will understand that all things accomplished by and through your power are good. Amen.

Marianne: bitter grace

Heavenly Father, I pray that Marianne will live the meaning of her name. I pray that in all trials, crises and difficult situations in her life, that Marianne will be able to see past the bitterness and turn to you, receiving your grace and letting it pass through her to others. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Joan will live the meaning of her name. I pray that she will understand and accept your grace, so freely given. I pray also that she will reflect your grace to others that they may see you through her life. Amen.

Roy: red

Heavenly Father, I pray that Roy will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will look upon Jesus as the source of his salvation through the shedding of Jesus’ lifeblood. I pray that when he thinks of his name, it will remind him always of Jesus’ precious gift to him and the world. Amen.

Thomas: twin

Heavenly Father, I pray that Thomas will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will joyfully accept God’s twin gifts of grace and mercy and understand that accepting the gift of forgiveness means returning the gift to forgive others. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Dennis will live the meaning of his name. I pray he will remember the true God and that you live—not on a mountain—but are everywhere in this amazing universe. I pray that Dennis will be reminded of the many miracles that you performed on earth, Jesus, beginning with the very first miracle in Canaan—turning water into wine. Amen.

Edward: protector; guardian

Heavenly Father, I pray that Edward will live the meaning of his name. I pray that he will live his life as a protector and guardian of his strong faith in you and that he will seek to aid people who need protection from evil in this world. Amen.

Martha: lady

I pray that Martha will live the meaning of her name. I pray that she will live with graciousness and kindness to all, reflecting the graciousness and kindness that comes from you. Amen.

Roxanne: star, bright, dawn

I pray that Roxanne will live the meaning of her name. I pray that she will illuminate the world around her and that her light will be a reflection of God’s love to mankind. Amen.

Interestingly, the two boys names I picked to research and pray for this month BOTH mean broad or wide meadow. So my prayer for both Bradley (Brad) and Sidney (Sydney, Sid, Cid) are the same.

Also, the names Dana and Sydney are often used as both boys and girls names. Just substitute he/she where needed.
　

Dana: arbiter; variation of Daniel that means "God is my judge"

Heavenly Father, I pray that Dana will live the meaning of her name. I pray that Dana will seek justice in all things. I pray that she will be known as a peacemaker to others and especially in your eyes. I pray that she will trust in your ultimate justice. Amen.

Linda; Lynnette; Lynn: pretty one

Heavenly Father, I pray that Linda will live the meaning of her name. I pray that others will see her quiet, inner beauty throughout her life. Moreover, I pray that her spirit of beauty will be a delight to you and a reflection of your love to others. Amen.

Bradley; Brad: broad meadow

Sidney; Sydney: wide meadow

Heavenly Father, I pray that Bradley/Sidney will live the meaning of his name. I pray that his life will remind others of your promise in Psalm 23—that being in his presence will feel restful as if they are lying down in green pastures. More than that, I pray that Bradley/Sidney will seek the comfort and peace that you provide, trusting and resting always in you. Amen.

Virginia, Ginny: virginal, pure

Heavenly Father, I pray that Virginia will live the meaning of her name. I pray that she will live a pure life for you. I pray that—whatever mistakes she makes; however she may sin—that when she returns to you, repents and is forgiven—that she understands that your forgiveness returns her to purity in your eyes. I pray that always she will seek to live a pure life for you. Amen.

Joyce: little lord

Heavenly Father, I pray that Joyce will live the meaning of her name. I pray that she will understand her station in life as an adopted daughter in your family; that once she accepts Jesus, she becomes royalty as the adopted daughter of the King. I pray that always she will understand that you are Lord and thus, though royalty, she is little, while you—Oh, mighty God—are big. Big enough to handle every situation, every crisis, every joy, everything in the universe, no matter how large or small. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Greg will live his name. I pray that he will live his life, ever vigilant in right living. I pray that he will be watchful for your leading, blessings and grace in his life and give thanks to you in all things.

Harold, Harry: army ruler

Heavenly Father, I pray that Harry will live his name. I pray that as a soldier in your army, he will fight against evil wherever he sees it and will live his life wearing the full armor of God for his protection and for your fight.

Susan, Susannah, Suzanna, Susie: lily

Heavenly Father, I pray that Susan will live your name. I pray that she will live her life focusing on purity. I pray that, like the lilies in the field, she will be beautiful to you and to others. I pray that her faith will be ever fresh and always green—sprouting off shoots to encourage others in their faith. I pray that she will remember the laurel wreaths given to winners of Olympic games—and be victorious through Christ.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Dorothy will live her name. I pray that she will recognize that she is a gift from God to the world and will live an example of a godly woman to others. I pray also that she will live her life in acceptance of the greatest gift from God—salvation through Jesus. Amen.

Lyle: island  

Heavenly Father, I pray that Lyle will live his name. I pray that he will be a place of safety and rest for those around him needing respite from the seas of life. I pray that his name will remind him that although we must live our lives as a separate island one from each other, we are never separated from the love of God. Amen.

Walter, Walt: commander of the army; powerful warrior 

Heavenly Father, I pray that Walter will live his name. I pray that he will live as a powerful warrior for Christ. I pray that he will remember that you are the eternal, heavenly commander of his life and of your divine army, but that you will use him in a strong way in your fight against evil. Amen.

Taryn, Tarin: of the earth (terra)

Heavenly Father, I pray that Taryn will live her name. I pray that she will live, knowing she is of this earth but that her eternal home is with you. I pray that she will remember her heavenly home and set her sights on you in all things. 

Wyatt: son of guy

Heavenly Father, I pray that Wyatt will live his name. I pray that he will remember that he is your son, your child and that he will live his life in a God-honoring and obedient way.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Deborah will live her name. I pray that just as the bees pollinate the flowers of the field, that Deborah will share her faith in you to others; that they may be fed and enriched by you through her. I pray also that her faith will produce sweet honey; a nectar that will feed and delight others in you.

Gail, Gayle, Abigail: joy of the Father

Heavenly Father, I pray that Gail will live her name. I pray that in all things she will bring joy to you. I pray that it will be your joy also to pursue her heart and draw her close to you. Father, please also show her ways to be a joy to others and a recipient of joy that passes from you to those around her.

Kirk, Kyrk: church

Heavenly Father, I pray that Kirk will live his name. I pray that Kirk will be one of your people all the days of his life. I pray that he will be a strong part of your church. I pray that he will be an example to others of his faith in you and will bring others to understand your love and promises.

Stewart, Stuart:  steward of the estate or castle

Heavenly Father, I pray that Stewart will live his name. I pray that he will be a righteous steward of all that you have provided to him in this life. I pray also that he will be a God-honoring steward of the eternal estate you have offered him as your child; an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven. I pray that as a steward, he will be a light and an example of your inheritance to others.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Eric will live his name. I pray that he will understand that you are the true eternal ruler. I pray that he will surrender his life and all things to you and that you will rule his life according to your plan.

 

Mark: warlike 

Heavenly Father, I pray that Mark will live his name. I pray that he will understand the existence of the spiritual world. I pray that he will live his life in training as a soldier of Christ. I pray that he will be fervent in his obedience to you as the commander in chief of your army.

Luke: from Luciana; the Apostle Luke was the beloved physician 

Heavenly Father, I pray that Luke will live his name. I pray that he will live his life according to the example of the Apostle Luke; following Jesus’ example as a committed disciple. I pray that, like the Apostle Luke, Luke will be beloved of God and that his example of faith will be a source of spiritual health and healing to others.

Ray, Raymond: protection 

Heavenly Father, I pray that Ray will live his name. I pray that he will know your love and strength as protection for his soul. I pray also that he will be a source of strength and protection for others and that it will be for your glory.

Terri, Terrie, Theresa: harvester 

Heavenly Father, I pray that Theresa will live her name. I pray that she will be part of your harvest; that when you gather your followers, she will be first in line. I pray also that you will use her in your harvest—to share the gospel and your love to others so that as you called your disciples, you will call her to be a worker for the harvest.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Cynthia will live her name. I pray that she will be a gentle light to all around her, shining, not for her own glory, but reflecting your light to others. I pray that her faith will have the power of the tides, to affect the faith of others, in a gentle, yet faithful way.

Kurt Curtis, Conrad: courteous; bold wise counselor

Heavenly Father, I pray that Kurt will live his name. I pray that he will live a life worthy of you, courteous to others and bold in his wise counsel. Infuse him with wisdom and let his true counsel come from you.

Heavenly Father, I pray that Steven will live his name. I pray that he will live for you, Jesus, as the true Crowned One and ruler of his life. I pray also that he will understand his place as your child; an adopted son of the King of the Universe and will live his life according to the nobility he possesses in your name. I pray also that throughout his life, his actions will bring him many crowns that he may toss at your feet in eternity.
